Birmingham Farewell (Evening) Meeting Racecard – Monday, 21st June 1965

An original racecard from the final ever meeting at Birmingham Racecourse, held at Bromford Bridge on Monday evening, 21st June 1965. The racecard is offered in Good Used Condition and covers the six-race Farewell Meeting.

The closing meeting marked the end of racing at Birmingham after more than 70 years. Bromford Bridge had first staged racing in 1895, but the racecourse was sold to Birmingham Corporation for redevelopment, bringing racing at the venue to an end in June 1965.

Historical Context

The meeting on 21st June 1965 was the final chapter in the history of Birmingham Racecourse at Bromford Bridge. The course had been an established Midlands racing venue since the nineteenth century, staging both flat and National Hunt racing.

The Farewell Meeting was an evening fixture beginning at 7.00, with six races scheduled at half-hour intervals. A crowd of around 9,400 attended the final meeting, which brought racing at Bromford Bridge to a close.

The final meeting also provided a memorable conclusion for Lester Piggott, who rode two winners during the evening, aboard London Way in the Letheby & Christopher Handicap Stakes and Selly Oak in the Bromford Handicap Plate.

The last race ever run at Birmingham was the Farewell Plate, over five furlongs. Welshman was the winner, ridden by Greville Starkey.
